President Nishani awards the “Medal of Gratitude” to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Admiral Stavridis
In a ceremony held on this occasion in Mons, Belgium participated Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, Major General Xhemal Gjunkshi.

In a special ceremony held today at the HQs of Allied Command Operations (SHAPE) in Casteau, north of the city of Mons, Belgium, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, Major General Xhemal Gjunkshi, handed the “Medal of Gratitude” to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Admiral James G. Stavridis. This medal is awarded to Admiral Stavridis on the occasion of the successful completion of his high office by the President of the Republic of Albania, Mr. Bujar Nishani with this motivation: “For the special attention and contribution of Admiral Stavridis to the transformation and modernization of the Armed Forces and full integration of our country in NATO.”
While taking the floor at the ceremony, General Gjunkshi praised the role of Admiral Stavridis, expressing the deepest respect for the senior leadership, the enlightening ideas, advices, the warm spirit of communication, for his support to the Albanian Armed Forces, also citing key moments of the Admiral’s brilliant career.
Later in his speech, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces stressed that, the commitment and leadership of Admiral Stavrids, leading the ACO, has been extraordinary for all countries of the Alliance and beyond, in the arena of global security. “Once again, I express my respect and gratitude for your attention and contribution to my country and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Albania. The medal awarded today is just a symbolic memory of the respect for everything you’ve done,” concluded his speech Major General Xhemal Gjunkshi.
In the speech held at this ceremony, Admiral Stavridis expressed the great satisfaction and special thanks for the medal awarded by the President of the Republic of Albania, assessing both the role and leadership of the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces and Albania’s achievements under his leadership, especially in fulfilling their obligations for the assessed contributions to NATO-led operations, and in the process of full integration into NATO, after the membership in the Alliance.
A special moment was especially created when Defence Minister, Mr. Arben Imami called to Admiral Stavridis during the official ceremony, who personally thanked for the close cooperation and support he has given to the Albanian Armed Forces. Admiral Stavridis, in turn, expressed to Minister Imami the sincere thanks for the close cooperation with the Minister of Defence of Albania, with whom he had the chance and the opportunity to meet several times, in Brussels and in Tirana. At the end of his speech, Admiral Stavridis expressed the satisfaction that he had the chance to cooperate with Albanian leadership and promised that, the established links will be strengthened even more in the future and that, he would be willing to help our country in the future regarding the new tasks that will be assigned to.
