The swift action of operational forces, with support from Armed Forces personnel and an airborne Cougar helicopter, successfully contained a fire that broke out this afternoon at the Finiq Archaeological Park.
Defense Minister Pirro Vengu, along with the mayors of Finiq and Delvinë and Vlora County Prefect Kristo Kiço, was on-site to oversee the situation.
In a statement to the public, Minister Vengu described how the fire had posed a significant threat in the hills between the two municipalities since midday. However, thanks to the coordinated efforts of multiple teams, a large part of the fire was brought under control: “We had eight fire trucks, 40 firefighters from both municipalities, and 65 Armed Forces personnel working on the ground. The Air Force also provided crucial aerial support, which prevented the fire from reaching residential areas. Afterward, our priority was to protect the economic zones and the culturally and archaeologically significant areas of Finiq Park.” - Vengu said.
He continued: “We were able to protect the entire cultural heritage of the park, including the basilica, the ancient treasury, and the amphitheater.”
The minister added that they would remain vigilant and continue to monitor the situation throughout the night.
Vlora Prefect Kristo Kiço commended the immediate response from Finiq Municipality, stating that the fire spread rapidly, but thankfully, there was no damage to homes or people.
The operation included extensive resources from local government bodies in Sarandë, Himarë, Gjirokastër, Dropull, and Konispol, along with support from Armed Forces personnel and the Cougar helicopter.
