The new academic year begins at AFA, Minister Vengu: Interest in joining has increased by 138% in five years

The new academic year was officially inaugurated today at the Armed Forces Academy (AFA). The opening ceremony was attended by the Defence Minister Pirro Vengu; the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Arben Kingji, the Commander of the Armed Forces Academy, Brigadier General Bardhyl Nuredinaj, faculty members, students and their families.

In his welcoming address, Minister Vengu congratulated the students on the start of the new academic year, emphasizing that they have chosen one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in the country.

The Minister highlighted the growing interest in joining the Armed Forces, noting a significant increase in applications over recent years.

“In 2020, we had 685 applications. In 2024, we had 1,114. This year, we received a total of 1,634 applications, a 138% increase in just five years. From these candidates, 400 were initially selected through the national application portal and testing. Ultimately, the top 80 were admitted, including 10 candidates from Kosovo.” - minister Vengu stated.

He also noted the rising trust in the Academy's quality, reflected in the Officer Preparation Course, where applications have doubled.

Speaking about infrastructure investments, the Minister emphasized that the AFA is currently building one of the most modern higher education campuses in the country, thanks to a substantial government investment:

“You will be the first generation to experience it in just a few months. Designed to the highest standards, this campus will feature modern academic buildings, student dormitories, a health center, sports facilities, and outdoor training ground.” - he said.

Minister Vengu underlined that the Armed Forces Academy, now an accredited institution, is fully equipped to compete with dignity in the European military education space and to be at the forefront of the transformation of the Albanian Armed Forces.

This academic year, the Academy is home to a total of 297 students, including 56 women, enrolled in the three years of the First Cycle program and in the Advanced Officer Preparation Course.
