Ministry of Defense on the alert for snowfall and frost


The Ministry of Defense addressed a letter to 12 Prefects requiring them to take precautionary measures for expected emergency situation that may arise from precipitation and frost, from 3 January 2019 onwards.

The Ministry of Defense has asked all county Prefects, as well as the heads of municipalities and central institutions at regional and local level, to take urgent measures according to their areas of responsibility, to cope with any emergency situation, and provide the necessary conditions, so that the communities live a normal life.

The Ministry of Defense through the General Directorate of Civil Emergencies has asked Prefects to communicate with the contracting entities to make available all their human and technical capacities, to collect sufficient quantities of salt, etc., in order to remove the snow from the roads, eliminate road frost, clean roads from inert materials and stones that may fall into the road, etc.

The Ministry of Defense has asked Prefects to cooperate with the state police structures, ARAA, OSHEE for a normal management and circulation of vehicles in road axes, especially those that carry out the transport of student and teacher to schools and vice - versa. It also demanded that the glitches concerning the power supply of the community, social-cultural facilities, hospitals etc., be solved on time to better cope with the situation caused by precipitation, frost, etc.

The Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces have taken safety measures and are ready to face the difficult situation, expected to be created by the snowfall and frost predicted to cover our country in the coming days.

The Armed Forces regional support structures, remain willing to interfere with their vehicles and troops to the most problematic areas, while pilots and helicopters are on alert and prompt at the Farka Air Base as well.

The National Operational Center of Civil Emergencies at the General Directorate of Civil Emergencies in the Ministry of Defense is 24 hours in standby to assist in emergency situations.
