Albanian Defence Minister Pirro Vengu, meets Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Robert Kalinák

In a meeting held in Tirana, Albania’s Defence Minister Pirro Vengu, welcomed the Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister of Slovakia Robert Kalinák. The two ministers discussed the Alliance’s collective defence objectives, current security challenges, and key changes in Europe’s defence architecture. 

Minister Vengu emphasized that as NATO allies, Albania and Slovakia are committed to enhancing their cooperation in the face of threats confronting Europe. He also expressed Albania’s readiness to contribute more to the continent’s security by increasing defence spending and investments.

“Our goal remains to gradually reach 3% of GDP for military spending by 2030.” - Minister Vengu stated.

Highlighting Slovakia’s advanced defence industry and Albania’s ambition to revitalize its own, Minister Vengu called for an exchange of practices and expertise in the defence sector. He proposed the launch of bilateral consultations between defence experts from both countries to address regional threats and challenges, explore avenues of cooperation in areas such as education, training, joint exercises, and military medicine.

During the meeting, Minister Vengu also expressed his gratitude for Slovakia’s support in Albania’s EU integration process and its ongoing efforts to become a member of the European Union by 2030.

Minister Vengu praised Slovakia’s constructive stance on Kosovo, stressing that stability in the Western Balkans is essential for all of Europe. He reaffirmed Albania’s commitment to regional stability through support for missions like KFOR and EUFOR. Both ministers reiterated their continued support for Ukraine.
