Land Force equipped with the “Javelin” missile system, Minister Vengu: A message of strategic clarity and partnership with the United States

A ceremony marking the delivery of the “Javelin” missile system was held at the Land Force Command in Zall-Herr, introducing a new capability for the Albanian Armed Forces as part of military cooperation with the United States.

The ceremony was attended by Defence Minister Pirro Vengu; U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Tirana, Nancy VanHorn; Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Arben Kingji; as well as senior officers and personnel of the Land Force.

In his remarks, Minister Vengu stated that the delivery of the “Javelin” system represents an important milestone in strengthening Albania’s defence capabilities and its strategic partnership with the United States:

“Today, we deliver to the Land Force the Javelin system in its entirety, a component ordered years ago as part of our close cooperation with the United States. This system is not merely a symbol of strength and capability, but also a message of strategic clarity.” he said.

The Minister emphasized that investment in defence is essential to ensuring security and preventing crises:
“The cost of preparedness is always lower than the cost of unpreparedness. Albania has chosen to invest in times of peace, with planning and fiscal discipline, in order to enhance credibility and deter risks through real capabilities.” Minister Vengu stated.

He also underlined the defensive nature of Albania’s military strengthening:
“Albania does not arm itself to attack anyone, but so that no one may put it to the test.” he said.

Minister Vengu added that he has had the privilege of leading the Ministry of Defence, describing defence as a pillar of the state.

For her part, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Nancy VanHorn described the provision of the “Javelin” missiles as an important step in advancing the security partnership between the two countries:
“The delivery of these Javelin missiles by the United States is tangible proof of our commitment to regional security and the strength of the NATO Alliance.” she stated.

VanHorn emphasized that the system represents advanced military technology and enhances the operational capabilities of the forces that employ it:
“These systems enable operators to relocate immediately after firing and have a top-attack capability, striking the most vulnerable point of enemy armor.” she noted.

The U.S. diplomat also highlighted the importance of increased defence investment and military modernization as part of the shared responsibilities of Allies, while commending Albania’s contributions to international missions.

The “Javelin” is a next-generation anti-tank missile system produced by the United States. It is highly effective against armored vehicles and is widely used by NATO militaries, including in active combat operations. Albania ordered the “Javelin” system through U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programmes as part of bilateral military cooperation. This investment forms part of the Armed Forces’ long-term modernization strategy, aimed at strengthening deterrence and achieving full alignment with NATO capabilities and doctrine.
