Belgium, Defence Minister Ermal Nufi meets NATO Supreme Allied Commander General Alexus G. Grynkewich

Nufi: “Porto Romano and Corridor VIII are strategic investments for NATO mobility”

Albania’s Defence Minister, Ermal Nufi, conducted an official visit to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), where he met with NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Alexus G. Grynkewich.

Minister Nufi stated that the meeting at SHAPE reflects the strong and lasting partnership between the Albanian Armed Forces and NATO allies, emphasising that Albania remains fully committed to NATO, collective defence, and the transatlantic alliance amid increasing geopolitical and security challenges.
Discussions with General Grynkewich highlighted Albania’s growing role within NATO’s decision-making, operational, and strategic structures.

“Albania’s presence at the highest levels of NATO command has become a concrete reality, reflecting the professionalism of our Armed Forces and the confidence our allies place in Albania as an active contributor to Euro-Atlantic collective security. The continued support of our Allies is crucial for strengthening our defence capacities and enhancing operational readiness.”- Minister Nufi said.

Minister Nufi also assured General Grynkewich that Albania continues to prioritise the modernisation of its Armed Forces and the fulfilment of all NATO-related commitments, while upholding the pledge made in The Hague on defence spending and advancing reforms in the field of security and defence.

The two officials also discussed the Porto Romano Naval Base and mobility along Corridor VIII. Minister Nufi described these as major strategic projects through which Albania is investing significantly in infrastructure to reinforce NATO mobility, interoperability, and operational preparedness.

Another key topic of discussion was Albania’s commitment to expanding its contribution to NATO operations in the Western Balkans, including KFOR and EUFOR ALTHEA.

Both sides acknowledged that the region remains vulnerable to malign influence, hybrid threats, and cyberattacks, making continued allied coordination essential.

Minister Nufi also informed General Grynkewich that Albania is making intensive preparations for the historic NATO Summit that will take place in Tirana next year.

SHAPE serves as NATO’s operational headquarters, bringing together the Alliance’s strategic planning, operational leadership, and multinational coordination.
