Prime Minister Rama meets NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels; Tirana confirmed as host of the next NATO Summit

Prime Minister Edi Rama held a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, focusing on current challenges to Euro-Atlantic security, enhanced strategic cooperation within the Alliance, and Albania’s contribution to advancing common defence priorities.

The discussions placed particular emphasis on strengthening coordination with NATO in responding to hybrid threats, including cyberattacks, disinformation, foreign interference and threats to critical infrastructure. These evolving security challenges underscore the need for closer cooperation and a coordinated approach among NATO Allies.

Another key topic was the development of Corridor VIII as a military mobility corridor connecting the Adriatic and Black Seas. The corridor is of strategic importance for facilitating military mobility, enhancing operational readiness and strengthening security on NATO’s southeastern flank. The meeting also addressed the Porto Romano project and its potential to enhance infrastructure and logistical capabilities in support of the Alliance’s strategic needs.

The meeting further reaffirmed Tirana as the host city for the next NATO Summit, following the decision previously reached by the Allies. Hosting the Summit marks an important milestone for Albania, reflecting both its role as host of the Alliance’s highest political-level meeting and its growing responsibilities and contribution to Euro-Atlantic security.

At a time of heightened international uncertainty and increasingly complex geopolitical challenges, the upcoming NATO Summit in Tirana will bring Albania and the Western Balkans to the forefront of strategic discussions on the future of collective security, highlighting the region’s significance for stability and security across the Euro-Atlantic area.

Defence Minister of the Republic of Albania, Mr Ermal Nufi, also attended the meeting held at NATO Headquarters in Brussels.

Commenting on the meeting in a social media post, Minister Nufi stated:

“The recognition and encouragement received regarding the progress made in Albania’s defence sector serve as an incentive to pursue, with determination, the modernisation and further strengthening of our defence and security capabilities.”

Minister Nufi further stated:

“Albania remains a reliable and committed NATO Ally, determined to fulfil its obligations within the Alliance and to make an increasingly meaningful contribution to collective security and the protection of our shared values.”
