Although keeping the situation under control, after a 48-hour operation of controlling and extinguishing the fire on Sazan Island, air intervention was deemed necessary.
For this purpose, a Canadair CL 415 aircraft sent from Greece is joined today early in the morning to extinguish the fire from the air on the island of Sazan. The Canadair CL 415 aircraft will intervene to extinguish the fire from the air in support of the Civil Protection Mechanism of the European Union (Emergency Response Coordination Center - ERCC), following the request of the National Civil Protection Agency.
Greece immediately responded positively to the Albania's request. The experts estimated that the intervention from the air was sought as necessary in seizing the flames due to the difficult terrain, despite the tireless work of the Land Force which were unable to isolate all the hearths.
Despite the air intervention, the ground intervention and the creation of deforestation zones were essential of neutralizing the fire at a former military base.
The Canadair CL - 415 aircraft is specifically designed for firefighting from the air, but it can also perform various other roles, such as search and rescue and transport.
The Defence Minister Niko Peleshi, who is on an official visit to Greece thanked the authorities for the timely response to Albania.
