Minister Vengu, on an official visit to Kosovo, received by Kurti and Maqedonci: Strengthening defense cooperation

On his first official visit abroad as Defence Minister Pirro Vengu followed tradition by choosing Kosovo as his destination.

Minister Vengu began his visit by meeting with Kosovo's Prime Minister, Albin Kurti. Their discussions focused on strengthening defense cooperation, promoting regional stability, and ensuring close collaboration with allies to support Kosovo's international standing.

He also met with his counterpart, Ejup Maqedonci, where he expressed deep appreciation for the excellent and fraternal relations between the two nations. He emphasized that cooperation with Kosovo is seen as strategic, vital for regional stability, and crucial for the Euro-Atlantic integration of the region.

Minister Vengu reaffirmed that Kosovo remains a top priority for Albania and, by extension, for the Ministry of Defense, which has always stood by and supported the development of the Kosovo Security Force.

Concerning Kosovo's aspirations for membership in international organizations, Minister Vengu assured that Albania would be a strong advocate: “The year 2024 will be a demanding one for Albania's Ministry of Defense, as we will be leading several regional initiatives, with many activities within these frameworks being directed and organized by us (A5). I assure my colleague Maqedonci that this opportunity will be fully utilized, not only to act as a strong advocate for Kosovo but also to intensify efforts for its full membership in these initiatives.”

The discussions also included deepening cooperation on demining operations along the border areas between the two countries and providing necessary support for further strengthening the Regional Civil Emergency Center.

Another key point of the meeting was the security and defense situation in the Western Balkans, with a particular focus on Kosovo. “We believe that the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, coordinated with Kosovo’s strategic partners, the U.S. and the EU, should result in a legally binding agreement that ensures mutual recognition between the two countries, Kosovo's membership in the UN and the EU, and fair treatment of minorities in line with Kosovo’s Constitution.” - stated Minister Vengu, who also thanked Mr. Maqedonci for his warm reception.
