In his remarks, Minister Vengu highlighted the historical importance of the army’s creation, describing it as a decisive act by the Founders of the Nation. He said that 113 years ago, Albania had its flag and had regained the conditions for sovereignty within a European context, but it was still searching for a uniform.
The Minister underlined that the decision to establish the Armed Forces was taken without guarantees and in the face of great risk, guided by the principle that “a nation without defence stands exposed to the forces of history.” He emphasized that raising the Flag proclaimed Independence, while founding the Army built its shield.
Reflecting on the challenges of the past century, from wars and dictatorship to Albania’s return to the European family, Vengu noted that the country has always had men and women who believed that the homeland is upheld through intellect, discipline, and sacrifice. He stated that the fate of Albania and the fate of its Armed Forces are intertwined. In 1912 they were essential for survival; today, they are essential for progress.
He stressed that security remains the defining challenge of our time, one that demands investment, modern technology, and strong human capital. Vengu said that security is never guaranteed, which is why the focus remains on developing human capital, strengthening operational capabilities, and advancing technological modernization.
The Minister highlighted that more than 800 young recruits train with the Armed Forces each year, describing them as one of the engines of social development. He said that service members are the first line of security and the reason Albania moves forward without fear.
Speaking about Albania’s contribution to NATO, Vengu emphasized that the country’s security stems not from size, but from the dedication of the men and women in uniform. He noted that sixteen years after joining NATO, Albania is secure because its allies trust it, something he witnessed firsthand in Bosnia and Herzegovina during his visit with Albanian troops serving there.
At the close of the ceremony, the Minister extended his best wishes to all members of the Armed Forces and their families.
