Minister Nufi: Defence Industry a strategic priority for Albania

Defence Minister Ermal Nufi has identified the development of Albania’s defence industry as a national strategic priority. In a video message, Minister Nufi said Albania has entered a new phase in which the defence industry will contribute not only to national security, but also to the country’s technological, industrial and economic growth.

“Every step towards developing the defence industry in the Republic of Albania is good news for our country. Regardless of the speculation, misinformation and politically motivated accusations of those seeking to remain relevant, one fact is undeniable: the defence industry is a strategic priority for Albania. It supports both our national security and our commitments as a NATO member. Albania has entered a new phase in which the defence industry is no longer seen solely through the lens of security, but also as a strategic opportunity for the country’s economic, technological and industrial development." - Minister Nufi said.
He noted that the state-owned company KAYO is currently involved in six joint ventures with international companies. Meanwhile, the first 40 Albanian-made vehicles have already entered service with the Armed Forces.

“For many years, this industry was treated as a legacy to be dismantled. Today, we are rebuilding and strengthening it with capabilities designed for the future. Through KAYO, the state-owned company established in 2024, we are developing partnerships with leading international companies. Six joint ventures are currently under way through public-private partnerships involving KAYO. The first 40 domestically manufactured vehicles have already entered service with the Armed Forces, and we will soon begin producing small-calibre ammunition." - Minister Nufi added.

The Minister also highlighted the role of Fincantieri Albania and plans to manufacture personal protective equipment for the Armed Forces and other security institutions:
“Through Fincantieri Albania and our partnership with a prestigious international shipbuilding company, we are not simply purchasing vessels. We are building Albania’s capacity to manufacture them here, meet our own needs and export to other allied countries. Personal protective equipment for the Armed Forces and security institutions products that until now were imported will soon be manufactured in Albania in accordance with the highest international standards.” - Minister Nufi said.

He stressed that the defence industry should be viewed not only as a security priority, but also as a source of employment, technological advancement, domestic manufacturing and economic growth.

“These are only the first steps. After 17 years of benefiting from the security provided by the Alliance, Albania is increasingly taking concrete action to become a genuine contributor to our collective security. This is something that should make everyone proud young and old, across the political spectrum. For decades, defence was viewed simply as a cost. Today, we are building an industry around it one that strengthens security, advances technology, expands national capabilities, creates jobs here in Albania and ensures that our country has the resources it needs to remain secure." - Defence Minister Ermal Nufi concluded.
