At the Explosive Materials Plant in Mjekës (Elbasan) has just finished the process of demolition of the last excess ammunitions of the Armed Forces, but the work of this plant has just begun, as its production line is soon to be restored.

Defense Minister Olta Xhaçka was in Mjekës, where she symbolically destroyed the last cartridges and announced a very important investment in this plant. "We just demolished the last excess ammunitions of the Armed Forces, a difficult but an indispensable process where the Explosive Materials Plant in Mjekës had the main responsibility. Mjekës has just completed the demolition process of ammunitions and it is very important that we may preserve the history or the traditions of the military industry of this area and particularly of Mjekës, for the capabilities it offers. We are in the final steps of completing a significant investment with a Europe's leader company in the weapons and ammunition production and it will not only invest in Mjekës but will also provide extraordinary opportunities for opening new jobs’ position", - said Minister Xhaçka.

The Ministry of Defense and the General Staff are negotiating with many companies that are part of NATO countries for Mjekës Plant revitalization and for other ammunitions manufacturing and demolition companies.

Reestablishing the production line of this plant will not only open a new page for the Albanian military industry but will also affect the economy of the surrounding area as it is expected to create dozens of new jobs.

The Explosive Materials Plant in Mjekës had the main burden in the industrial demolition process of excess ammunition. During 2009 - 2017, the total amount of ammunition disposed is 26.005 tons.

Minister Xhaçka was also at the Gramsh Mechanical Plant, which is carrying out the process of industrial demolition of excess ammunition. This company has to demolish about 600.000 detonating caps by the end of this year.
