The Military Cyber Security Unit, a structure of the General Staff of the Armed Forces is already operational with the support of the USA, Albania's strategic ally.
Prime Minister Edi Rama, Defence Minister Niko Peleshi, Charge d'Affaires at the US Embassy in Tirana, David Wisner, as well as the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, Major General Arben Kingji, participated in the inauguration of this unit that will play a vital role to combating cyber threats and protecting our information systems.
They became closely acquainted with the structure and function of this unit, which aims to manage cyber security systems that supervise and monitor: Communication and Information Systems of the Armed Forces from unauthorized intrusions into these systems.
A foreign advisor will be attached to this unit, who will support this structure for 3 years for cyber security.
In this unit, the latest technology, such as the one in the USA is used. Therefore, according to experts, there has been no information leak from the Ministry of Defense.
In his speech, Defence Minister Niko Peleshi stated that the goals for this unit are to serve as a school to train experts, not only in the field of Defence but also for the other agencies and why not the private market:
"Not only this project is very complete, but we also have the great opportunity to receive continuous information, to have training in the network of NATO cyber defense innovation centers. There is a NATO center in Estonia, and we are part of it. The possibilities are huge. A very high standard of protection has been achieved in a short time. They are very motivated, as they are 50% military and 50% civilians. We want to further expand this structure, to use it as a school to train experts who can serve not only the Armed Forces but also the private sector, because ultimately this increases the national defense capacities." - said Defence Minister Niko Peleshi.
Currently, according to experts, there are 1,500 to 2,000 attacks every day, but none of them are considered critical.
In the Military Cyber Security unit, which consists of three separate sectors, it works non-stop (24/7).
