Albanian patrol boat concludes navy’s first NATO tour

The Albanian Navy’s ALS ORIKU patrol boat on Wednesday (22 November 2017) wrapped up a full year of operations with NATO’s Standing Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2), marking a major milestone in the Albanian Navy’s first ever NATO deployment. Joining NATO’s Aegean mission in November 2016, the ALS ORIKU monitored and patrolled the waters between Turkey and Greece, supporting international efforts aimed at curbing human trafficking.

Chiefs of Defence provide direction and guidance on key NATO priorities

chods family photoGeneral Petr Pavel, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, opened the Military Committee Conference by thanking Albania for its hospitality and for all the hard work that had gone into the hosting and organising of the event. General Pavel also expressed his gratitude for ''Albania's contributions to NATO's shared security and the valuable role Albania plays in promoting cooperation and stability in the Western Balkans''.

The twenty-nine Allied Chiefs of Defence, the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee and the Albanian Prime Minister then held a moment of silence to honour the victims of the recent attack on the London tube, the Romanian soldiers killed and wounded in the attack against their convoy in Kandahar, Afghanistan and all the men and women who have been killed or wounded in the line of duty.

The Secretary General’s Annual Report

sgar2022 en 01On 21 March 2023, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg released his Annual Report for 2022.

It details NATO’s work and achievements throughout the year, including the Alliance’s unprecedented support to Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country, the continued strengthening of the Alliance’s deterrence and defence posture in light of the biggest security crisis in Europe since the Second World War, and the adoption of a new Strategic Concept at the Madrid Summit.

The Report contains the results of NATO’s annual public perception polls, which also include surveys from Finland and Sweden for the first time.

NATO in front of the new security challenges

1. Tell us more about your role as Chairman of the NATO Military Committee and the Military Committee?

The Chairman of the Military Committee is elected by the NATO Chiefs of Defence, normally for a three-year term. As Chairman, I represent their consensus-based views and serve as the senior military adviser to the Secretary General, the North Atlantic Council and other NATO organizations. I guide the agenda and deliberations of the Military Committee, NATO’s highest military authority, listening to views and working to reconcile divergent national positions or policy differences to fashion advice that all can agree to. Each Nation has an equal voice in the discussions and decisions.

The Ushtar Eagle has landed

The UK’s NATO ally Albania hosted over 200 RAF Reserves and Regulars in numerous locations around the country as they trained together developing operational teamwork and friendships on Exercise Ushtar Eagle 17.
